For a second there, I almost wrote ‘Grace in BAD things’. Because the bad things? They are a-plenty.

A new computer. Free, from friends who had a spare one lying around.
I backed up my documents and photos before my hard drive completely died
Urban maple tree tapping (I have 3 litres of sap in my freezer for this project)
Seeing the local mental hospital being demolished to make way for a friendlier institution (The Mook’s daycare is within sight of this, so it’s been interesting to see the day by day progress.)

This week started off with a computer that would display nothing but the blue screen of death. And a boss who forgot to include me in the payroll. And rent due. And $8.04 in my bank account. Oh, and a research project due on Wednesday.

So, to distract me from my stress, I have a project.

A local shopkeeper and fellow single mum has a little boy who will be turning 3 very shortly. In fact, Leon and I share a birthday.

He’s a cool kidlet to start with and being a Pisces adds to that.

He’s recently become very interested in the mail and so, for this birthday, his mum Jola has asked for friends to send cards in the mail. I don’t know about you, but I’m thrilled when I get anything other than a bill in the mail.

I’m going to expand on that and see if I can’t get some postcards sent from different parts of the world. You know…where readers of this blog live!

This is where you come in…all you need to do is find a postcard, stick a stamp on it, write a message and address and stick it in the mail.

Grace in Small Things – week 8

Reading up on preserving, including the book: Jam It, Pickle It, Cure It: And Other Cooking Projects by Karen Solomon
Spanish Fly by Will Ferguson. Really enjoyed this even tho I thought it was about 50 pages too long
Spotting coyotes outside my “office” window. I love urban wildlife.
Being sick without having to compete with The Former Mr over who is sicker
Grocery shopping with The Mook. I save the big shopping trips for when she’s with her dad, but every so often on our way home from daycare, we’ll hit the convenient (but damn expensive) grocery store to pick up something needed that night for dinner or breakfast the next morning. We made a game of her finding an avocado (it’s dark green and egg-shaped) and then she helped me pick out an avocado. She, of course, wanted to visit the fish and lobsters in the tanks, so we did and she was sad that there were no fish (“People bought them to eat them, right?”). We were distracted by the bread options; we are both fans of crusty ciabatta rolls, so she helped me decide between big ones and small ones. Then onto olives from the salad bar; The Mook loves olives and pickles and other salty stuff. We were like pinballs around the store – fruit! fish! cupcakes! bread! olives! fish again!

PS – And when I say sick, I mean sick. I’ve got $234 worth of anti-biotics (you know, the same cost to feed Mook and I for a month) and I’m just taking the time I’ve got to sleep and try and get better. BUT I’m still writing – or attempting to – and I’ll be hitting publish on a couple of posts over the weekend.

If the person you describe as a confidante and lover tells you she is sick to the point that she requires $234 worth of anti-biotics and spent the weekend scrounging around for child care so she could sleep and get better…

…would you not follow up and see how she’s feeling?

A canning and preserving workshop this weekend
It’s been one year since I lost my job. Why is this grace? Because it was toxic and I’ve spent this last year learning about myself and what I need in a work environment.

The Mook and I, along with her ‘pretend brother’ and his mom, will be spending this weekend at a waterpark resort at Niagara Falls.
I held a hedgehog at a pet store last night. She was adorable and snorfly.

The arrival of a baby, born to friends of mine. She is 10 weeks early and weighs under two lbs but she is feisty and thriving.
Having the flexibility to be home with The Mook when she’s sick and trading my M/W/F schedule for M/Th/F.
Being accepted into a training program that I feel may lead me to the path I’m meant to take
Being appreciated and asked for my advice by friends and colleagues
The Mook’s knock-knock jokes, which border on the absurd.

I should point out that I can’t help but laugh upon hearing the punch line, which leads her to saying “Mummy, is that funny? Am I funny?” and, of course, the answer is ‘yes’.
